Parrafo 1

Legend says that Don Sancho emerged victorious in the famous Battle of Clavijo, in 844, in spite of losing his spear in combat and having to rally his troops using a yew branch. This battle and others made him a hero of the Reconquest.

Parrafo 2

For this reason, King Ramiro called him "el de Tejada" (the one of the yew branch) and as recognition of his and his thirteen sons’ unswerving loyalty and valour, he granted him the Privilege that protects the ancestral rights of his House, the only Lordship remaining from the 9th century to the present times.

- Winemaking -

Párrafo1

Heredad de Tejada is a collection of wines made in the heart of Rioja Alta. Its winemaking process combines tradition and innovation, using modern facilities to create wines while following a natural process. For example, this wine is made in large vats with large mouths, imitating the traditional winemaking method in "lagos abiertos", where whole grapes are deposited in open vats and the carbonic maceration takes place.

- The vineyard -

Párrafo1

The wines included in the Heredad de Tejada collection are born in old vineyards that are have mostly been planted in poor land within the region of the Rioja Sonsierra. As its name suggests, “Sonsierra” is at the foot of a mountain range on the south side of the Toloño Mountain, which is part of a larger mountain range called Sierra de Cantabria. The microclimate generated by the northern mountains and river Ebro at the south are perfect for the vineyard. The breeze from the mountain range in combination with the cierzo (local northwest wind) and the solano (local southeast wind) provide an essential aeration that keeps the vineyard healthy.

Párrafo2

The rainfalls are more abundant in winter than in summer. The area's orography is very uneven with a series of valleys that drop from the mountain range to the river providing the land with many slopes and terraces of limestone-clay soils that have good drainage, yielding the best Tempranillo grapes, which is the only variety used in the red wines of Heredad de Tejada. The grapes are hand-picked, cluster by cluster, as the vineyards are gobelet trained, which is the traditional system followed in the Riojan viticulture.
